The idea of placing an eagle's nest on top of a totem
has interested me for some time. I've not seen it in real life but
I'm not ruling out the possibility. "The Eagle Returns"
is a fantasy. The poles in the painting are both eagle poles that
happen to exist in much less decayed form where I live in White
Rock, BC, Canada. The village itself is a reconstruct of many of
the deserted villages on the coast of Alaska and BC. To me it's
not at all about sentiment, but about symbolic power. We celebrate
the circle of life and the return of the eagle to our coast. Size: 17" x 20" This work was inspired by a trip to Haines, AK in
November, 2004. On his first visit to the area, the artist was impressed
by the sheer immensity of the landscape, the qualities of northern
light, and the presence of wintering Bald Eagles. Of this work, he says, "This work recalls the
atmospheric conditions of my visit to the area, a memorable combination
of cold, fresh mountain air, grey skies, and scattered morning light.
This light intrigued me, glancing off sulphur-yellow eyes, playing
over rich, dark tones of plumage and casting soft shadows over ancient,
lichen-encrusted rock. The challenge was to use this element with
a very restricted range of colors to unify eagle and landscape. My intention with the eagle itself was to convey an
idea of the living presence of these magnificent birds, their sheer
size, their almost rock-like solidity and their deliberate, unhurried
movements. I also sought to convey, be means of a casual glance
over a shoulder, my perception of the fundamental indifference and
impassiveness of their nature." Size: 28.5" x 21"
"The Bald Eagle is a moiety of the Chilkat Tlingits of Southern Alaska. These birds are frequently carved into their great totems by artists of the tribe. This older pole in the painting has been around for a long time.
