The wolverine is the largest land-based weasel at 13-40 lbs (6-18 kg). They require huge expanses of wilderness. Due to their scarcity, they can be over-hunted for their coveted, frost-repelling fur. Males may require 115-260 square miles (300-670 sq km) of territory; two to six females may share territories that overlap with a male’s.
These feisty weasels have been known to kill and eat moose and caribou. Wolverines have snowshoe-like paws that allow them to walk on crusted-over snow. When they encounter an injured or snow-stranded moose or caribou, their powerful, bone-crushing jaws can quickly dispatch their prey.
