Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Red squirrels are typically heard before they are seen. These squirrels are known for their loud chattering warning calls, commonly referred to as “cussing”. Besides their noisy nature, red squirrels are also well known for their habit of caching food. Green spruce cones are prized by squirrels, as are mushrooms which they will dry and store among tree branches. Squirrels will also eat seeds, berries, spring buds, eggs, and occasionally carrion.

Unlike many other squirrel species, the red squirrel does not hibernate. In bad weather, the red squirrel will curl up in their nest and wait out the storm.
