Despite once being endangered, bald eagles have made a comeback throughout most of their native range. The bald eagle is a sea eagle who depends upon water for the fish they eat. Although they are capable of hunting, bald eagles will often scavenge or steal food from other animals.
Bald eagles are only found in North America, ranging from Alaska to Mexico. Their prevalence in the United States made them an excellent candidate for the American national symbol. Benjamin Franklin, however, considered them to be “of bad moral character” and wanted the turkey to be the nation’s symbol instead.
