The raven is considered to be among the cleverest of birds, a title appropriately given to the corvid family. A disproportionally large beak and diamond-shaped tail help distinguish the raven from the northwestern crow. It is not uncommon to see ravens team up against other animals. While one raven distracts the victim, another will sneak in to steal food. These opportunists will readily eat carrion, insects, eggs, nestlings, vegetation, and any food or garbage left unattended.
The native peoples of the Northwest coast considered the raven to be a trickster who possessed god-like qualities.
