Oncorhynchus nerka

Sockeye salmon are known for their characteristic spawning colors: a bright red body, a green head, and a green tail. This small salmon averages between 4 and 15 lbs (2-7 kg). In Haines, the sockeye salmon who return to Chilkoot Lake to spawn are an important food source for subsistence fishers as well as brown bears, eagles, and seals.

Sockeye salmon are unusual because their favorite food remains krill and other small zooplankton throughout their life. While other adult salmon enjoy a diet of smelt, herring, and small fish, sockeye salmon are unusual in their consistent diet of krill and other small zooplankton throughout their adult life.
