The China rockfish is mostly black with striking yellow markings. A single yellow band extends horizontally along most of their body. China rockfish are territorial and rarely venture more than 30 feet (10 m) from their home. They prefer rocky outcrops with lots of hiding space. Like most other rockfish, they have a long lifespan and can live up to 79 years.
This rockfish has long been a popular food fish. Commercial fisheries have caught and sold China rockfish since the 1800s. The China rockfish was sold for twice the price of most other rockfish during the Great Depression.
