Maia grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she honed her skills in identifying local birds and wildlife with the guidance of her naturalist father. Seeking to deepen her understanding of ecology and ornithology, she enrolled at Cornell University and became an active member of the Cornell Raptor Program, sparking her passion for the care and study of birds of prey.
Driven by her love for wildlife and the outdoors, she journeyed to Haines, AK, in the summer of 2023 to join ABEF. In this new environment, Maia continues her exploration of birds of prey, specifically focusing on bioacoustics and vocal communication. In the near future, she plans to establish a dedicated lab with ABEF to investigate how these techniques can be integrated into the conservation efforts of southeast Alaska.
